The weatherman was forcasting a snow storm but luckily it held off until 5PM. A hardy group of riders and one visitor showed up in very windy and cold conditions. After a needed stirrup cup , and a few well deserved toasts by MFH Luke ( saluting Matthew, our Professional Huntsman's first full year hunting , his wife Julie our Secretary and the membership ) the field headed out in our home country in the Loess Hills of Western Iowa.
The riders and hilltoppers that did show up were treated to a great day of hunting as there were 3 chases and views this day 2 coyotes and one fox. Hilltoppers with Sam were able to see the fox run across the road right in front of the when the hounds struck and Charlie ran a big circle to backtrack the hounds and field and reverse their direction.
Given the weather, most of the field retired back to the clubhouse after the whoopie wagon break after 2 hours of hunting and this long run. MFH Luke led a field of 4 on for another hour for the last run of the day. THis was a great end to the season, one which saw the pack coming together more and the number and frequency of finding game has signalled a good season next year as well.
There were a few thrills and spills and a lost shoe here and there that resulted from the hard riding but all riders and horses appeared in good enough condition ( some sore though ) for the wonderful catered hunt breakfast that followed provided by our Masters. Some 50 year old Brandy was opened for the occasion ( for medicinal purposes ) and to toast the season. Many hunt members that did not ride or hilltop showed up to to share in the meal and express their appreciation for the great season.
We still have some informal meets and a big Western Challenge Tour weekend in Burwell ( 4/05-07 ) coming up. Then its time for the Hunt Ball, The annual Meeting and the Hunter Trials in April.
