Western Event Challenge 2004
Red Rock wins the 2004 Challenge !
Pictures of the presentation of awards
By Beverly HeffernanThe perpetual trophy and belt buckle for best day's sport went to Red Rock , with Bijou Springs named as reserve.
The Western Challenger bronze will also be held by Red Rock, they raised $700 and the total raised throughout the tour is $3400 which will go to the Nevada Women's Fund.
The Stalwart Award initiated by Arie Rijke and Noel Ryan last year, for the foxhunter who attends the most meets, went to Kathy Tourney of Arapahoe who edged out Ted Crosbie from Moingona.
I hope everyone had fun and I for one hope to make the whole Tour next year to make up for this year. Our judges Betsy Parks and Eleanor Harwell will be available for a longer period of time, it appears, from mid-March on, so, starting in the west and heading east, we'll probably be able to accommodate more hunts over a 3 week period (or longer, depending on how late into April the easternmost hunts can go).

Initial Tour Announcement
Its time for the Sixth annual WCT event! This hunt event has rapidly become one of the premiere hunting events of North America. The focus on Coyote as a quarry for traditional mounted hunt clubs has made this a distinctive and exciting event of high speed chases and the wide open country of the American West and Plains!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DECEMBER 22, 2003 SIXTH WESTERN HUNT CHALLENGE TOUR SET FOR MARCH-APRIL 2004
Nine hunts in the western United States will participate in the sixth annual Western Hunt Challenge Tour, to be held March 30 to April 13, 2003. Two judges will determine which pack shows the best day's sport, with the winning hunt's designated charity to receive a cash prize based on donations by participating foxhunters and other interested parties.
The goals of the Western Challenge include increasing camaraderie among the widely dispersed hunts of the western U.S., providing the opportunity to gain insight from experienced judges for the benefit of the participating packs, and supporting worthy charities. The Western Challenge also affords interested foxhunters from around the world the chance to enjoy hunting with a wide variety of packs, in a wide variety of country.
Six packs of foxhounds, one pack of harriers, and two packs of beagles will be judged in 2004: the Coal Valley Hounds, McCune, KS; the Wabash Hounds, Imogene, IA; the North Hills Hunt, Omaha, NE; the Bijou Springs Hunt, Parker, CO; the High Country Hounds, Flagstaff, AZ; the Paradise Valley Beagles, Phoenix, AZ; the Red Rock Hounds, Reno, NV; the Kingsbury Harriers, Inyokern, CA; and the Waldingfield Beagles, Charlottesville, VA (travelling west to participate in the Challenge).
The judges for the 2004 Western Hunt Challenge Tour are: Charles Montgomery, professional huntsman of the Live Oak Hounds, Monticello, FL, and Clive Rose, retired huntsman of the Moore County Hounds, Southern Pines, NC. The Tour will begin on March 30 at the Coal Valley Hounds in Kansas. From there the Tour will proceed to the Wabash Hounds in Iowa, the North Hills Hunt in Nebraska, the Bijou Springs Hunt in Colorado, the High Country Hounds and Paradise Valley Beagles in Arizona, and concluding in Nevada where the Red Rock Hounds will host the Kingsbury Harriers and the Waldingfield Beagles.
Past winners of the Western Hunt Challenge Tour are: 1999, Mr. Jeffords' Hounds, for the benefit of the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association; 2000 and 2003, the Red Rock Hounds, for the benefit of the Nevada Women's Fund; 2001, the Wabash Hounds, for the benefit of the Make-A- Wish Foundation; 2002, the Bijou Springs Hunt, for the benefit of two therapeutic riding programs in Colorado. A perpetual trophy is awarded to the winning pack along with a belt buckle for the winning huntsman. In addition, in 2003 John Jeffords, MFH of Mr. Jeffords' Hounds, donated a new perpetual trophy, the "Western Challenger," to the hunt that raises the most funds for the charity prize fund. This trophy was held for 2003 by the Kingsbury Harriers.
